Rock climbing is a sport for those who err on
the side of adventure or seek an adrenaline
rush. The best way to see if this sport is for
you would be to join an indoor climbing gym.
Most climbers are friendly and keen to teach
and help and you’ll meet heaps of great people
at the gym.
You’ll soon realise whether the heights and
physical and mental demands of climbing are
something you want to pursue. You can rent
equipment there while you test out your
aptitude for the sport instead of going out and
buying the pricey equipment.
Once you’re hooked on the sport though
, you’ll need to get your
own
rock
shoes
,
harness
,
10.5-millimeter dynamic rope, three
locking carabiners,
a
belay
device
, 5
D-shaped biners, webbing or slings, and
assorted
chocks.
When you’re
learning to climb
c
hoose your instructor carefully. You'll
initially be totally dependent on their skill
so you need to know that they really know what
they are doing and talking about. Also watch
other climber, ask them questions and learn
from their experience. It’s also a good idea to
get your hands on climbing magazines, videos
and books as there is so much to
learn.
As much as this is a physical
sport, it’s just as much, if not more a mental
and technical sport. You need to think
strategically, keep calm, map
out
the path in order to
make the climb and at the same time look for
the safe spots. Climbers have to prepare their
bodies and minds especially when tackling
difficult
climbs.
